Our mother, the war
As a child, Wadji Mouawad witnessed atrocities and chaos in his native Lebanon. The strife-wracked country in his play Scorched has much in common with Lebanon, even if it is never named. As stipulated in their mother's will, twin siblings Simon and Janine must return to this land in search of a father they believed was dead and a brother they didn't know they had. Their journey reveals much about their mother's life that Simon and Janine never considered possible, and examines the horror of wanton destruction along with the power of the creative spirit in the face of war. The Orange Girls Theatre Company presents Scorched at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday (September 12 through 28) at the Center of Creative Arts (524 Trinity Avenue, University City; www.orangegirls.org or 314-520-9557). Tickets are $18 to $20.
