Underneath It All

There's a world down there

Some people drive by a shuttered factory and think, "What a waste." People like Max Action pass that same building and think, "What an opportunity." Action (not his real name) is an urban explorer, one of those bold and clever seekers of forgotten places who finds thrills poking around in sewer tunnels, abandoned tourist sites and long-dead buildings. Why? Because it's a whole 'nother world down there, lost and beautiful and exciting because you know you're seeing something that few people have seen in years. Melody Gilbert takes you into this subculture in the documentary Urban Explorers: Into the Darkness, which screens at 7 p.m. tonight at Moore Auditorium (470 East Lockwood Avenue, Webster Groves; 314-968-7487 or www.webster.edu/filmseries) as part of the Webster Film Series. Tickets are $5 to $6.
