It's impossible to listen to Liam Finn's debut album, I'll Be Lightning, without picking up strains of the melodic gifts and lyrical incisiveness passed down by his father, Crowded House leader Neil Finn. But while the elder Finn pairs musical restraint with loaded wordplay, Liam fans out to both ends of the rock & roll spectrum, unleashing gale-force bursts of noise and energy as well as a string of soft-touch ballads. "Lead Balloon" rolls along like a fuzzbomb of Britpop and Northern Soul, while "Lullaby" earns its title through Finn's sweetly ragged vocals and a dreamy, lilting melody. Liam Finn's frenetic live shows have earned him a name in his own right, because the singer and his bandmate Eliza-Jane Barnes whip up a flurry of looped percussion and six-string excursions.— Christian Schaeffer
