Guitar Anti-Hero

Strings attached

The title of artist Pepe Mar's upcoming gallery show asks a question that's sure to send all rock & roll survivors into a fit: Who Needs Guitars Anymore? It's a fair question, though Mar uses the six-stringed instrument (among other materials) to create vivid, monstrous creatures. His anthropomorphic sculptures suggest a marriage of Picasso's Three Musicians and the monsters from Where the Wild Things Are — swatches of bright colors and polka-dotted patterns jut up against each other to create the impression of a torso or the sharp corner of a cheek. The beasties would be downright cuddly if they weren't so spiky and spindly. The exhibition opens with a reception from 7 to 10 p.m. on Saturday, September 20, and runs through Sunday, October 26, at White Flag Projects (4568 Manchester Avenue). Aaron Henderson: Metamorphoses, a video installation, is also on view. The gallery is open on Wednesday from noon to 7 p.m. and Saturday from noon to 5 p.m., and admission is free. Call 314-531-3442 or visit www.whiteflagprojects.org for more information.
Wednesdays, Saturdays. Starts: Sept. 20. Continues through Oct. 26, 2008
