Lovers of Lane

Tim Lane's Abandoned Cars

You may recognize artist Tim Lane's work because he produces You Are Here, a regular comic for this very paper. What you may not realize is that Lane's work is recognized and feted beyond the borders of St. Louis: Noted independent comics publisher Fantagraphics Books recently produced a hardcover collection of Lane's stories, Abandoned Cars (a panel of which is pictured). His is a world of lonely spaces, both geographically and psychologically, populated by people on society's fringe. Drifters and loners pass through the carnival of life wondering if they'll ever win the prize, sometimes aware enough to wonder if anyone else even notices they're playing the game. But mostly the denizens of Lane's stories struggle blindly, locked in the fun houses of their own minds. Lane visits Subterranean Books (6275 Delmar Boulevard, University City; 314-862-6100 or www.subbooks.com) between 7 and 9 p.m. Friday, September 26, to sign copies of Abandoned Cars and officially open a show of his illustrations in Subterranean's spiffy upstairs gallery. Admission is free, but you'll need money if you want a copy of the book. Lane's art remains up through Sunday, November 9.
