No you don't
In the Warner Bros. Road Runner cartoons, Wile E. Coyote often paints a tunnel or roadway on the face of a cliff in a vain attempt to dupe the Road Runner into smashing his brains out. Artist Wojciech Gilewicz outdoes poor Wile E., creating hyper-realistic paintings of building facades, boarded-up windows or sections of wall, and then hangs his work in front of the original inspiration where it hides in plain sight. In his 2004 New York Series, for three weeks people validated their subway tickets directly in front of Gilewicz's painting of the wall, unaware that a painting was inches away. The Front Room of the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis (3750 Washington Boulevard; www.contemporarystl.org or 314-535-4660) displays a series of Gilewicz's recent paintings, along with a video of these works being surreptitiously installed in various urban settings. The work remains up through Sunday, October 5.
