Over the last few months, dozens of new marine species have been discovered off the coasts of Indonesia and Australia, but artist Jason Hackenwerth has been inflating the number of bizarre and unusual creatures for years. Hackenwerth takes balloon animals to the nth degree, breathing life into elaborate, whimsical creatures constructed from hundreds of balloons. His creations, inspired by sea creatures, fossils and prehistoric monsters, have a limited life span, wilting and fading as air seeps from their gummy limbs, so large-scale photographs capture them in the prime of life. This Friday, October 3, Webster University's Cecille R. Hunt Gallery (8342 Big Bend Boulevard) hosts an opening reception from 6 to 8:00 p.m. for an exhibition of Hackenwerth's biomorphic beasties and photographs. Admission is free and the work remains on display through Friday, October 31. The gallery is open Monday through Friday.
