Road to Everywhere

It's time to get your kicks

Few roadways are as beloved as US Highway 66. The stretch of asphalt begins in Chicago and ends in Los Angeles, cutting through the heart of St. Louis along the way. Route 66 was decommissioned in 1984, but that hasn't kept people from celebrating the days of drive-ins and enormous chrome-plated cars. The St. Louis Route 66 Festival honors this historic highway with an all-day party on the Old Chain of Rocks Bridge (10950 Riverview Drive; 314-416-9930, extension 104, or www.confluencegreenway.org). The free festival begins at 11 a.m. with a classic-car display that spans the length of the bridge, and the revelry continues into the night with live music, a sock hop and a screening of American Graffiti.
