The Brasil Thrill

Sambas, Bach and other delights

If you're a music fan and you haven't attended one of the concerts presented by the Saint Louis Classical Guitar Society, you're cheating yourself. The opportunity to experience some of the world's most beautiful and moving music as delivered through the intimacy of the acoustic guitar is a gift you should accept graciously. Tonight at 8 p.m. at the Ethical Society of St. Louis (9001 Clayton Road, Richmond Heights; 314-567-5566 or www.guitarstlouis.net), the SLCGS opens its new season with the help of the Brasil Guitar Duo, João Luiz and Douglas Lora. The duo plays the standards of the classical repertoire — Bach and Scarlatti, for example — but the two also weave in the vivacious music of their homeland, such as the sultry samba and the earthy baião. The result is a program of sophisticated technical playing sure to please the traditionalists, and some surprises that will delight those music aficionados ever in search of new sounds — unless you're Brazilian, in which case the Brasil Guitar Duo will sound a lot like home. Tickets are $20.
