Because the Cardinals' season didn't work out so well and the Rams' doesn't look much more promising, you might think the local sports scene is readying for a long winter's nap. But this week there's a wake-up call: The St. Louis Aces are hosting St. Louis' first United States Tennis Association Women's Pro Circuit event at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center in Forest Park. Tennis, you see, never sleeps. This tournament draws up-and-coming women stars from around the world, so these are the players to watch if you're looking for the next big challenge for the Williams sisters. The Dwight Davis Merrill Lynch Championships run from Sunday, October 12, through Sunday, October 19; tickets to the tournament cost $5 to $10 for single-day admission and $20 to $35 for weeklong passes (Sunday and Monday are free). Gates open at 9 a.m. every day. For tickets and information, call the Aces at 314-647-2237 or visit www.stlouisaces.com.
