The endless summer of '70s Cali country-groove rock on David Vandervelde's Waiting For the Sunrise weirdly suits the Michigan-born, Nashville-based songwriter/multi-instrumentalist. His voice may suggest Paul McCartney or Gary Louris at their most languid, but his strongest radio pitches come in post-Carly Simon piano tapestries and just enough sweet psychedelia to suggest Vandervelde's glam persona isn't gone; it's just been sublimated to laying back and letting melodies have their way with him. On "Somebody Like You" he quotes Jackson Browne quoting Reverend Gary Davis on cocaine and on "Lyin' in Bed" goes for a Crazy Horse guitar blowout, presaging a live show that will more than mellow your mind.
