In an age when most of us are capable of only making a bowl of cereal, it seems amazing that there was a time during which people had to make their own lye soap! And brooms! And rope! Events like the Deutsch Country Days take us back to that era and remind us how difficult life was for the pioneers — and what a sweet deal we have now. Seriously, we can just go to the store to buy a stick of butter with nary a churn in sight! And our children don't have to make dolls before they can play with them! To further your appreciation of today's modern conveniences and to get back to your ancestors' crafting roots, head out to the Luxenhaus Farm (18055 Highway O, Marthasville; www.deutschcountrydays.org or 636-433-5669) from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday (October 18 and 19) for a fabulous olden good time. This farm is home to more than 30 restored log cabins that host all manner of pioneering activities and demonstrations, including the aforementioned ones, plus tons of yummy food and more. Admission costs $6 to $15, and parking is free.
