Learn from the Past

Life in St. Louis

Life experience is perhaps the best teacher, and we all can learn a lot from those who have a few more years than we do under our belts. Author Gail Milissa Grant knows this. In her book At the Elbows of My Elders: One Family's Journey Toward Civil Rights, she recounts stories from her childhood growing up in south St. Louis before and during the civil-rights movement and gives readers a peak into her family's past as well. The memoir offers a view of segregated St. Louis many have never experienced and sheds some light on how difficult life could be. To learn more about our past and to meet the author, you can either head over to the Missouri History Museum (Lindell Boulevard and DeBaliviere Avenue; 314-746-4599 or www.mohistory.org) at 1 p.m. on Sunday, October 19, or drop by Left Bank Books (399 North Euclid Avenue; 314-367-6731 or www.left-bank.com) at 7 p.m. on Monday, October 20. Books will be available for purchase at both events ($24.95).
