Brad Lawrence grew up in what he calls "the meth economy of Southern Missouri," and not just as a disinterested bystander. Various friends and family members were cogs in that combustible economic engine, and like most cogs, family and friends were occasionally completely stripped and burned out by the machine. Lawrence, called by one girlfriend a perpetual "stranger in a strange land," translates the experiences of growing up in such a bleak world but not really being of this world into a one-man show Monsters in the Wood, which received excellent reviews at the New York International Fringe Festival. A fortuitous bit of scheduling brings Lawrence back to St. Louis for two performances only, at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday (October 17 and 18) at the Tin Ceiling (3159 Cherokee Street; www.tinceiling.org). Tickets are $10 to $15 and are available at the door.
