H.G. Wells' seminal science-fiction novel, The War of the Worlds, has been adapted numerous times, most famously in feature films shepherded by George Pal and Steven Spielberg. But the one for the record books remains Orson Welles' October 30, 1938, Mercury Theatre radio adaptation, which presented the story as a series of simulated news broadcasts that convinced listeners nationwide that a Martian invasion was underway. For the next two weeks, St. Louis Shakespeare re-creates this live radio broadcast with staged readings of Welles' version at the Missouri History Museum (Lindell Boulevard and DeBaliviere Avenue). Performances are at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday (October 23 to November 2), and tickets cost $18 to $20. Visit www.mohistory.org or call 314-361-9017 for more information.
