Intro to Art

Listen, look and learn

In this modern world of spoofs, knockoffs and remixes, it might not seem important to ponder what belongs to whom and to whom credit should go. But these issues are still important, especially when you're talking about visual art. During tonight's Contemporary Art 101 lecture, which is held at the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis (3750 Washington Boulevard; 314-535-4660), chief curator Anthony Huberman (pictured) explores plagiarism and appropriation in the art world and leads a dialogue on these topics from 6 to 8 p.m. Questions like, "Does painting a mustache on the Mona Lisa create a new masterpiece?" will be discussed as will the concept of originality as it relates to artworks — we're guessing there's some gray area here. Participating in the course costs $10; register in advance by visiting www.contemporarystl.org.
