Journey to Gloomy Transylvania

It's a hell of a show

Don't be deceived by the title; the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra's Classical Detour: Transylvanian Halloween program at Powell Symphony Hall (718 North Grand Boulevard; 314-534-1700 or www.slso.org) features a paucity of Transylvanian music — just Bartók's Dances of Transylvania. This is more an exploration of the allusive nature of Transylvania and what it inspires in the imagination: the idea of darkness, something malignant in the forest, a healthy scare. You know, all the best parts of Halloween. The 6:30 p.m. performance features classic night terrors such as Saint-Saëns' Danse Macabre, Mussorgsky's Night on Bald Mountain (that's him pictured) and Berlioz's Dream of a Witches' Sabbath (is there a sound more chilling than those chittering strings?). The show is preceded by a 5:30 p.m. happy hour with drink specials and a beer-sampling, and tickets are $20 to $30.
