Dutch Treat

Frog tales and other delights

Dutch illustrator and author Max Velthuijs may not be a household name in America, but if your household has children occupying the corners and pillow forts, you're probably familiar with Velthuijs' friend Frog. Frog stars in a series of colorful and silly picture books that explores the usual themes of friendship and the importance of reading, but that also deals with more esoteric topics such as the sensation of falling in love (it makes Frog feel "like laughing and crying at the same time"). Whimsical and imaginative, the adventures of Frog and his pals Pig, Duck, Rat and Hare have been translated into a theatrical puppet show by the Dutch company Theater Terra. Come see Max Velthuijs' creations laugh and dance and fall in love in the family theater production Frog in the Clouds, staged at 7 p.m. Friday, 11 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Saturday, and 1:30 and 3:30 p.m. Sunday (November 7 through 9) at the Center of Creative Arts (524 Trinity Avenue, University City; 314-534-1111 or www.cocastl.org). The program is suitable for the very young and the very young at heart. Tickets are $14 to $18.
