The music of My Brightest Diamond is informed by singer/multi-instrumentalist Shara Worden's classical background, which lends a highly stylized intellect to her arrangements, and her love of experimental and avant-rock sounds (something that influenced much of 2006's Bring Me the Workhorse). On her new album, A Thousand Shark's Teeth, a haunting string quartet backs Worden as she performs eleven somber mood pieces. The production on Teeth has a certain glossiness that recalls Daniel Lanois circa his work with Peter Gabriel, with its respect for space and atmosphere, tightly wound bass grooves and tribal flourishes of percussion. These songs induce a dreamlike haziness but still manage to be subtly dynamic, rise and fall on her emotive, silky melodies. While parts of Teeth struggle to find their destination, Worden generally establishes a mood and sticks with it.
