The members of Young Widows wear their influences on their sleeves; in fact, it's easy to imagine homemade Fugazi and Dazzling Killmen patches sewn onto their hoodies. Not that anyone is complaining: The Louisville, Kentucky, band has perfected the mid-'90s basement-show indie rock that was popular when it recorded as seminal post-hardcore outfit Breather Resist. On Young Widows' latest album, Old Wounds, Evan Patterson's sharp-elbowed guitar work and commanding baritone bulldoze his band's fuzzed-out bass and Neanderthal drumming. It's a cocktail heavy enough to pummel the listener into oblivion — yet addictive enough to make the same listener swear they fell down the stairs to conceal the bruises.
