Make New Memories

Cats for your kittens

You'd think a musical about a group of cats deciding which one of them passes on to the afterlife would be depressing — because what animal lover doesn't enjoy the thought of a cat dying? — but Andrew Lloyd Webber's Catsproves that hypothesis to be incorrect. Cats played for years on Broadway and the West End, it's been translated into more than twenty languages, and it's inspired roughly a billion nine-lives-related puns. But Lloyd Webber's energetic story is so popular because it's so accessible; who hasn't felt like an outsider, as poor old Grizabella the faded glamour-cat does? This accessibility, the costumes and the high-octane dancing, make Cats an ideal introduction to theater for the wee ones. The national tour of Cats visits the Fox Theatre (527 North Grand Boulevard; 314-534-1111 or www.fabulousfox.com) at 1 and 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday (November 28 through 30). As an added enticement for the kiddies, every performance is preceded by free face-painting in the lobby beginning an hour before showtime. Tickets are $22 to $61. PHOTO © 2008, G Creative
