If you'd rather not blow through your paycheck on black Friday, you can enjoy the extended hours and rather affordable free admission at the Saint Louis Art Museum in Forest Park (314-721-0072 or www.slam.org). In addition to the current exhibition of post-WWII abstract American paintings, Action/Abstraction, having its fees waived on Friday, the Art After 5 program is also free of charge. Tonight Peter Henderson of the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra performs John Cage's Sonatas and Interludes for Prepared Piano, the audio equivalent of abstract painting. Cage's score calls for metal screws and bolts to be inserted between the wires of the piano at specific intervals, altering the familiar sound of the notes into something strange yet familiar. The resulting music is haunting and playful, sounding at times like a full Gamelan orchestra, steel drum, or an alien percussion instrument. Henderson performs at 7 p.m. in the Grigg gallery.
