Fish Story

Reel in the whimsy

Kids are smarter than you think — a fact that most children's entertainment misses entirely, choosing to spoon-feed them trite messages and boring stories. Performer Michael Cooper takes the other tack, believing that kids are smart enough to enjoy being puzzled and dazzled. His one-man show Masked Marvels & Wondertales is a visual feast, with massive, handmade masks representing characters such as a curmudgeonly trout who ponders how people would feel if he were fishing them out of the river. At the heart of Cooper's vignettes is a sense of wonder for the everyday world — there are questions and mysteries surrounding us, you just have to look for them. Cooper performs Masked Marvels & Wondertales at 11 a.m. today at the 560 Building (560 Trinity Avenue, University City; 314-935-6543), kicking off the Ovations for Young People series with a marvelous bang. Tickets are $10.
