Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin

9 p.m. Tuesday, January 27. The Billiken Club, in the Busch Student Center on the campus of Saint Louis University, 20 North Grand Boulevard.

It's easy to take Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin for granted. For starters, the quartet plays St. Louis quite often (probably because it's based in Springfield, Missouri), and the type of wool-blanket rock it favors succeeds because of subtlety, not originality. But last year's Pershing featured songwriting that was leaps and bounds above SSLYBY's 2005 debut, Broom. Feathery acoustic riffs and soft-glow vocals — along with jangly melodies, danceable rhythms and the occasional trumpet flourish — rivaled the note-perfect gems of the Shins, Blake Babies and early R.E.M. Word has it that the band has been writing new tunes and plans to hit the studio later this year. In the meantime, tide yourself over with the band's cover of XTC's "Another Satellite," a bit of spooky pop music with churning clouds of space-synths and appropriately eerie reverb.
