Yukon

8 p.m. Thursday, January 22. Lemp Neighborhood Arts Center, 3301 Lemp Avenue.

The graphing-calculator-complex tunes of Baltimore's Yukon make other math rockers look like students fumbling through pre-algebra. Songs like "Medallion" and "Ribosome" draw from the music of the band's Washington, D.C. neighbors — Fugazi's concrete basslines, Q and Not U's prickly guitar riffs and Burning Airlines' polymetric percussion. The result is danceable music that challenges your tapping toes, tunes that briskly start and stop as often as a city bus in rush-hour traffic. Although this seems like the recipe for an epic migraine, Yukon's algorithmic urges are more playful than pretentious — listening to the band is more like playing a game of Simon than studying for a calculus final.
