Eternal Teen Trouble

Growing up is a bitch

Moritz is a troubled teen, facing the stuck-up and stiff society of his elders with a clenched jaw and a snarl. Melchior's a bit more placid, but still a handful from a disciplinarian's point of view, as he's started experimenting sexually with his girlfriend, Wendla. Dressed in their schoolboy uniforms, the two look a bit like the early Rolling Stones — proper, but dangerous. And then in the midst of their middle-class lives, in middle-class, 19th century German society, Melchior and Moritz burst into frenzied song, railing at the world they didn't make and can't unmake no matter how loudly they shout. Spring Awakening, hailed by critics as an electric-rock musical, is based on Frank Wedekind's late-19th century play. Creative team Steven Sater and alt-rocker Duncan Sheik captured the terror and thrills of growing up, no matter what century you're living in. Spring Awakening plays at the Fox Theatre (527 North Grand Boulevard; 314-534-1111 or www.fabulousfox.com) Tuesday through Sunday (February 10 through 22). Tickets are $25 to $66. Tuesdays-Sundays. Starts: Feb. 10. Continues through Feb. 22, 2009
