Family Heirlooms

Grow your own!

Winter weather is manageable if you dress in layers. Driving in the winter months is fine as long as you're cautious. But there's nothing that can make eating tomatoes in the wintertime better. They're mealy, flavorless and just plain sad. If you're longing for a delicious tomato in February, Bowood Farms (4605 Olive Street; 314-454-6868) can't help you. But the garden center can educate you on how to harvest your own tasty tomatoes when the time is right, and all you have to do is attend a class on Missouri Heirloom Seeds, held at the nursery from 6 to 8 p.m. this evening. During this free instructional session, Jere Gettle from Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds of Mansfield, Missouri, provides guidance on growing spectacular heirloom tomatoes, peppers and more; plus, he'll tell attendees a little about how he sources his special seeds. Additional complimentary gardening courses are planned throughout the spring. Visit www.bowoodfarms.com to learn more about tonight's class as well as the others.
