Chairlift

8 p.m. Monday, March 16. The Gargoyle, on the campus of Washington University at Forsyth and Skinker boulevards.

Since relocating from Colorado to the hipster mecca of Williamsburg, Brooklyn, electronic metaphysicalists Chairlift have found a moderate amount of commercial success; for instance, its song "Bruises" was featured in a recent iPod commercial. But the band's unnerving atmospherics won't likely find their way into the mainstream anytime soon. Like MGMT and Yeasayer, Chairlift attempts to paint images from the subconscious in its music. But if MGMT's psychedelic dance-pop strives to report back about its drug-fueled journeys, Chairlift's music sounds as if it's being constructed in the midst of these trips. On the band's major-label debut, Does You Inspire You, Caroline Polachek's soaring, reverb-drenched vocals, rugged stabs of vintage electric guitar and woozy synthesizer loft are at once foreign and captivating. Cinematic and soothing, You could be the soundtrack to a late-'70s science-fiction thriller or the sonic backdrop of a David Lynch movie.
