Here We Go Magic

9 p.m. Thursday, March 12. Off Broadway, 3509 Lemp Avenue.

In some schools of thought, meditation works through the repetition of a mantra that elevates the practitioner beyond the cobwebs of thoughts into a deeper, inner peace. The music of Here We Go Magic, the Brooklyn-based electro-folk brainchild of Luke Temple, operates on many of the same principles. On the band's self-titled debut, Temple's airy falsetto hovers and quivers among brushes of acoustic guitars and hypnotic analog loops, delivering plaintive kÿans about how "anything is possible" in rare moments of clarity. At times the clopping percussion and polyrhythmic guitars sound like a bedroom-pop reconstruction of Ethiopian Tigrigna music; at other times, the bliss simply dissipates into watercolor drones reminiscent of Windy & Carl. Comparisons to Paul Simon seem premature, but fans of fellow Simon acolytes Grizzly Bear should find something nice to dwell on.
