Great Lakes Myth Society

8:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 25. Cicero's, 6691 Delmar Boulevard, University City.

The friends and brothers that make up the core of Michigan's indie-folk collective the Great Lakes Myth Society are a close-knit group. They've been making music together since the late '90s; in fact, their previous project, the Original Brothers and Sisters of Love, featured the same lineup plus violinist Liz Archinvole. But while that band's output and the 2005 self-titled debut from GLMS often focused on the hardships stemming from long Northern winters, 2007's Compass Rose Bouquet sounds more like the soundtrack to a spring awakening. "Queen of the Barley Fool" embodies this spirit: It commences with a solitary organ and vocal intro before the band emerges and lays down light, jangly guitars and tambourines over a bouncy rhythm section. These touches, along with a perfectly placed vocal breakdown, not only call to mind the folksy storytelling of the Mountain Goats, but also the ambient sheen of James and even the airtight, stylized sugar-pop of Jellyfish.
