The city of Baltimore has been a wellspring of creative energies for independent music lately. But while natives like Dan Deacon or Animal Collective breach the psychedelic with kaleidoscopic intensity, the slow-burning hymnals of Beach House offer a blessed respite from the mania of modern life. With the release of 2006's "Apple Orchard," the band's first single, the duo of Alex Scally and Victoria Legrand debuted a formula that marked its proverbial sweet spot: a golden-hued waltz accented with a vintage drum machine, filigreed organ and Legrand's melancholy vocals haunting the foreground. The pair fine-tuned its antique chamber-pop sound on last year's Devotion, a stunning album on which gauzy harmonies layered over lilting guitar leads matched the tenderness of Hazlewood & Sinatra. Spring may officially be here, but don't be surprised if Beach House's autumnal overtones make you unironically reach for a scarf this Friday.
