Tionól

7:30 p.m. Friday, April 3. Schlafly Tap Room, 2100 Locust Street.
Saturday, April 4. Union Avenue Opera House, 733 North Union Boulevard.

You're probably not looking for the Lollapalooza of Celtic music, but just in case you are, look no further than Tionól, a weekend of traditional Irish music in St. Louis that has become an annual destination for local, national and international pipers, fiddlers and tin-whistlers. But that's just the tip of the moor. Masters of the bodhran, harp, concertina, flute, banjo, guitar and mandolin will be gathering to conduct workshops, perform live and, more than likely, share a pint or seven. Highlights include world-renowned uilleann piper Michael Cooney, flautist John Skelton and bouzouki innovator Roger Landes, as well as a grand finale concert at the Union Avenue Opera House. If you think Irish music is just wistful songs of the old country, Tionól will introduce you to a new world of intricate, challenging and sometimes intensely rocking — yet still fiercely traditional — sounds.
