Engine Excitement

St. Louis used to be big into trains (you know, Union Station wasn’t always a shopping mall). Some of that old glory still exists — or, at least, excitement about it does. Pay tribute to the power of riding the rails on National Train Day (that’s today) at the Gateway Transportation Center (a.k.a., the new Amtrak station at 430 South 15th Street). The American Association of Railroaders Inc., based right here in St. Louis, is commemorating the holiday there from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with free educational exhibits, stuff for kids, collectible posters for adults ($5) and more. Plus, folks can celebrate the mode of transportation by taking a ride; three excursions are offered by AAR today, including a jaunt to Springfield, Illinois, leaving from the St. Louis station at 6:30 a.m. ($55 to $59). To learn more about the day’s events and the organization’s other train-focused activities, visit www.aar-therailroaders.org. And don’t forget: You can always board MetroLink to get downtown.
