Heart of the World
For many, St. Louis is not just a home but a refuge. But no matter how safe the environment, no matter how warm the welcome, a new home can never blot out the memories of what has come before. This is particularly true for the Afghan refugee women who fled the Taliban's violent rule. The new play My Heart Is Always Shaking: Afghan Refugee Women in St. Louis, based on 24 in-depth interviews, explores the realities of escaping an oppressive regime and arriving in an unknown place. Lee Patton Chiles' original script takes a clear and compassionate look at the challenges that shape the women's past, present and future. Gitana Productions stages My Heart Is Always Shaking at the Saint Louis University Theater (inside Xavier Hall, 3733 West Pine Mall) at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2:30 p.m. Sunday (May 22 through June 7).
