Magic Slim and the Teardrops

10 p.m. Saturday, May 23. Beale on Broadway, 701 South Broadway.

Like a fine whiskey, blues guitarist and singer Morris "Magic Slim" Holt seems to be getting better with age. The 72-year-old Mississippi native didn't record an album as a leader until he was 40, and he was still grinding away in small Chicago clubs in the '80s when contemporaries like B.B. King and Buddy Guy were headlining festivals and stadiums. Fortunately, persistence paid off, and by the mid-'90s, Magic Slim and the Teardrops were established on the blues festival and club circuit in the United States and Europe. Slim's 2008 CD, Midnight Blues, was one of the best blues releases of the year, and he and the Teardrops continue to deliver high-energy shows highlighted by the leader's encyclopedic repertoire, heartfelt vocals and slashing guitar.
