Crosby, Stills & Nash

8 p.m. Wednesday, June 3. The Chaifetz Arena at Saint Louis University, 1 South Compton Avenue.

The collective pants-wetting that greeted the release of Fleet Foxes' self-titled record last year had less to do with the shock of the new as it did the echo of something warm and familiar. Those microscopic harmonies and expertly plucked guitars owe no small debt to Crosby, Stills & Nash, the trio that basically created the template for melodic, intricate folk-rock. As one of the first true super groups, CSN found common ground among its members' disparate talents: Graham Nash brought Britpop smarts; David Crosby lent his otherworldly harmonies; and Stephen Stills provided the mortar with his rootsy, full-bodied instrumentation. (It also didn't hurt that Neil Young dropped in from time to time.) Touring as the original trio, CSN stands as a reminder that for all of rock & roll's trappings, it all comes back to the marriage of the acoustic guitar and the human voice.
