In the summertime many theater companies have completed their seasons and are taking a break, just like the kids are. But, of course, during the summer months is when you actually have the time to relax inside an air-conditioned theater and enjoy a show. Good thing the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville's department of theater and dance is gearing up to put on its Summer Showbiz season, which includes three shows for your viewing pleasure. First up is Greater Tuna, a comedy set in a small Texas town that features two actors who play many roles (not all of which are human!). Tuna opens at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, June 11, and continues Friday through Sunday until June 21 (Sunday shows are staged at 2 p.m.). Then, the musical Bye Bye Birdie opens on Wednesday, June 24, and the kids won't want to miss Roald Dahl's Willy Wonka, which begins Wednesday, July 15. Tickets to all shows cost $12 to $15 (at 618-650-2774), and Greater Tuna performances are held in the Metcalf Theater; the other two shows are staged in the Dunham Hall Theater, all on SIUE's campus (I-270 and Route 157).
Thursdays-Sundays. Starts: June 11. Continues through June 21, 2009
