Today's McMansions speak volumes about our disposable, new-obsessed culture — and much of what this kind of construction says isn't good. But what about the homes of yore, those good, sturdy structures carefully and individually designed and able to withstand the test of time (in some cases, at least)? What do they reveal about their owners and the era in which they were built? Cydney Millstein and Carol Grove explore some of our state's old houses, specifically those built from 1870 to 1940, in their book, Houses of Missouri. Through photos, floor plans and stories, this book introduces us to 45 homes of various wealthy individuals as well as a variety of architectural styles. The Missouri History Museum (Lindell Boulevard and DeBaliviere Avenue; 314-746-4599 or www.mohistory.org) hosts a free author presentation and book-signing featuring Houses of Missouri at 7 p.m.; books will be available in the Louisiana Purchase museum shop for $65.
