The Felice Brothers are one brother down — drummer Simone Felice left this year to pursue his new band, the Duke and the King. But siblings Ian and James, along with fiddler Greg Farley and bassist Christmas Clapton, continue their exquisitely dysfunctional family folk and postmodern country blues with 2009's Yonder Is the Clock. Transcending their Basement Tapes influences, obliterating any freak-folk back-to-nature fetishism and drowning its hippie string-band jam-outs in a wall of accordions-and-piano sound, the Woodstock, New York-raised broheems make a sumptuous racket. Clock spins narrative Americana as Mark Twain intended it: observant, realist, incisive and dripping with dark humor.
