Counting Crows

8 p.m. Friday, July 3. Fair St. Louis, Gateway Arch and Jefferson National Expansion Memorial.

"When everybody loves me, I'm gonna be just about as happy as I can be," daydreamed Adam Duritz in "Mr. Jones," the 1993 hit that brought overnight acclaim to Bay Area roots rockers Counting Crows. Back then Duritz was singing with his tongue firmly in his cheek. But how would the protagonist of "Jones" feel after sixteen years, four albums, Grammy and Academy Award nominations, declining sales, label fallout and a summer tour schedule that reads like a VH1 cautionary tale? Based on Duritz's recent past — he came clean about mental illnesses, shed 60 pounds and claimed to be the happiest he's ever been — and the Crows' protean, in-the-moment live shows, that young idealist desperate to believe in anything just might stand in the spotlight all over again.
