Legends of Funk Tour

8 p.m. Saturday, July 18. The Ambassador, 9800 Halls Ferry Road.

No less an authority than Professor George Clinton gave voice to a hopeful nation when he declared, "We want the funk/We GOTTA have that funk." Clinton's demands have been answered five-fold as an all-star revue of '70s funk veterans descends on St. Louis at the recently re-opened Ambassador. The Bar-Kays began as the house band for Stax Records and eventually became Otis Redding's backing group, and though several founding members died alongside Redding in his 1967 plane crash, the band regrouped and cut a number of fun, soulful hits. Writers of such stone-cold jams as "Love Rollercoaster" and "Sweet Sticky Thing," the Ohio Players are proof that ironclad funk can emerge from America's heartland. The Dazz Band had its biggest hit with the synth-enabled "Let It Whip," giving an electric pulse to their slick-wristed guitar grooves. Disco-jazz pioneers Brick and silky groovemasters Slave round out the five-band bill.
