Abe Vigoda

The beaches of Los Angeles are not the same pristine blue oases the Beach Boys used to harmonize about. Appropriately, LA's self-proclaimed "tropical-punk band" Abe Vigoda pollutes its steel-drum-emulating guitars with a thick fog of reverb and pushes its vocals under sand and broken glass. As members of the all-ages art scene revolving around DIY venue the Smell, the band has similar noise-rock sensibilities as buzz-generating pals HEALTH and the Mae Shi. However, it's the group's triumphant melodies and calypso beats that make its album Skeleton come off like Goo-era Sonic Youth covering "Hot Hot Hot." If/when earthquakes push Southern California into the Pacific Ocean, Abe Vigoda has a catalog of island jams for the apocalyptic dance parties that would ensue.

8 p.m. Saturday, July 25. The Luminary Center for the Arts, 4900 Reber Place. $8. No phone. www.theluminaryarts.com.
