Although she had success in the early '80s as a pioneering female hip-hop artist — otherwise known as Angie B. of Sugar Hill Records girl-group the Sequence — South Carolina native Angie Stone took nearly two decades to establish herself as a solo act with the retro R&B sound of 1999's Black Diamond. So Stone has always been what they call a grower, a trait confirmed when her latest album, 2007's The Art of Love & War (which helped relaunch the classic Stax label) became her highest-charting release to date.
