Spending cash and gobbling up properties is not just a strategy for redeveloping the city's north side. It's also the premise of the board game Monopoly. As everyone knows, the goal of the game is to have the most title-deed cards and to own as many houses and hotels as you can afford — and also to bankrupt your opponents. Sounds like less of a fun game now, huh? This overzealous capitalist strategy is exactly what irks artist Alison Ouellette-Kirby about Monopoly. In Home From Work To Find Your Spaniel Turned Into A Wolf, her new exhibit at the Good Citizen Gallery (2247 Gravois Avenue; 314-348-4587 or www.goodcitizenstl.com), the sculptor uses the familiar form of the Monopoly house to explore ideas of home and place. The artist acknowledges that an individual's perception of these concepts changes throughout a lifetime as circumstances evolve — events like moving and aging certainly play a part in how we view "home." The show features large pieces and smaller, more delicate works, all of which are on view at the gallery beginning Friday, July 31. The opening reception for Home From Work is held from 6 to 10 p.m. the first day of the show; the exhibition remains on view from noon to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday through Saturday, August 29.
Fridays, Saturdays. Starts: July 31. Continues through Aug. 29, 2009
