Arc Angels

8 p.m. Friday, July 31. The Pageant, 6161 Delmar Boulevard.

The Arc Angels has had plenty of media exposure — most of it bad and feeding off the supergroup trifecta of drugs, egos and acrimony. But the Austin band's sole album, a self-titled 1992 release, still sounds like the best record Stevie Ray Vaughan never cut. The rhythm section of Chris Layton and Tommy Shannon had been members of Double Trouble (and guitar idols Charlie Sexton and Doyle Bramhall II actually formed the group in the wake of Vaughan's death), but their volatile chemistry overcame their blues-rock braggadocio. On a good night, the band sounded like a Texas version of Cream. One such night will be captured this year as a concert DVD and a new album (sans bassist Shannon) is in the works. Miss this rare St. Louis date at your peril.
