Trashcan Sinatras

9:30 p.m. Saturday, August 8. The Firebird, 2706 Olive Street.

Although its second-ever single (the jangly Britpop classic "Obscurity Knocks") is still its most recognizable and successful song, the Trashcan Sinatras never lets the relative obscurity that followed stop it. After releasing two more albums in the '90s, the band was dropped from its label and had to file for bankruptcy. It spent the next several years regrouping and trying to find a new voice amid this atmosphere of disillusionment. What emerged was 2004's Weightlifting, a critically acclaimed collection of slightly more tepid and atmospheric numbers than the bouncy pop for which it had become known. The recently released In the Music finds the band returning to more pop-centric territory. The first single, "People," combines hints of '60s-era British psychedelic pop and saccharine-sweet vocal melodies with echo-laden acoustic strums and punchy jabs of crystalline clear lead guitar.
