20 Cents a Play

For their next performance of their ongoing Drawn & Quartered theatrical events, the actors of the Immediacy Theatre Project will present 35, two-minute long plays. Is it a concession to shrinking attention spans, or an exercise in the hyper-reality espoused by Grant Morrison's characterization of the Joker in Arkham Asylum? Maybe both. Drawn & Quartered eschews the theatrical staple of "character," opting instead to have actors address the audience directly. There's also a prepared video element, further breaking down the insular, world-apart quality of the theater and its need for an audience to willingly suspend disbelief. This is the sort of performance that will either wear you out or exhilarate you. Or again, maybe both. Performances are at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday (August 14 and 15) at the Luminary Center for the Arts (4900 Reber Place; 314-807-5984 or www.luminaryarts.com), and tickets are $7.
Fri., Aug. 14; Sat., Aug. 15, 2009
