It's a good thing old postcards are pretty because those folks back in the early 1900s weren't much for words. Oftentimes, these old cards just contain your average well-wishes — no secrets, no vacation dramas. You'd think that if people were going to take the time to send a card, they'd at least write something of substance on it. But maybe they were going by the old adage of a picture being worth 80 words (images today are worth 1,000 words, because of inflation).To have a look at some 1 million miniature pieces of (often) very affordable art and to read the amazingly short notes on their flipsides, head to the Postcard Show at the VFW Hall in Collinsville, Illinois (at 1234 Vandalia Street; 618-531-4189). This display and sale is hosted by the St. Louis Gateway Postcard Club from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday (September 4 and 5), and admission is free.
