Hockey season is nigh. Everybody's talking optimism and improvement and returning stars and a fresh start and young players stepping up — the onset of the new season, even preseason, always brings out the best in the fans. But lest we inx-jay the whole thing — after last year's preseason golf outing, hard lessons were learned — let's just say that we're excited about the game of hockey as a whole. Do we wanna see David Backes crush somebody and poach a puck? Yes. Do we wanna see David Perron deke and swoop his way across the ice? Yes. Do we wanna see what an Alex Pietrangelo/Erik Johnson blueline can do? Oh, sweet Barclay and Bobby Plager do we ever. But mostly we just want to see NHL-level hockey played again. The Blues start preseason with a game against the Minnesota Wild at 7 p.m. at Scottrade Center (1401 Clark Avenue; 314-241-1888 or www.stlblues.com). All right, since it's the Wild, let's add a Cam Janssen vs. Derek Boogaard fight to the wish list. Tickets are $34 to $247.
