Take one look at (or listen to) Dear and the Headlights, and you'll likely be baffled when you learn that it's from Phoenix, Arizona — while it may be hot as hell there, a cultural hotbed it ain't. But somehow, through the seas of strip malls, retirement communities and eggshell-white sedans, this quintet has successfully tapped into a jangly mixture of indie rock and y'allternative on its most recent album, 2008's Drunk Like Bible Times. The songs are gloriously ramshackle in nature, creating a loose, live vibe that translates well to the stage. They apparently have friends in high places, too, having previously logged treks with Paramore, Plain White T's and fellow Arizonans Jimmy Eat World. Something tells me the two bands were able to skip the small talk about the weather.
